With a Ph.D. in Comparative Religions and Psychological Anthropology from

the University of California, Berkeley, Ruth-Inge Heinze has devoted her

life to spirituality and healing.  She has been conducting research  and

teaching in Asia, Europe, and the Americas since 1960.  Her work is

reflected in six books. e.g., The Role of the Sangha in Modern Thailand

(1974), Tham Khwan: How to Contain the Essence of Life (1982), Shamans of

the 20th Century (1891), Trance and Healing in Southeast Asia Today

(1988/1997), Fire from Heaven: The Nature and Function of Rituals (2000);

The Light in the Dark: The Search for Visions (2001). She edited 21 books

and wrote over a hundred essays for professional journals.

Ruth-Inge Heinze is a long-term meditator and has been president of a

Vipassana group in the Bay Area.  She is the founder and national

director of Independent Scholars of Asia, Inc. since 1981.  She also

conducts a monthly Dream Group and designs the lectures for the Universal

Dialog Series and the California Society for Psychical Study.  She

furthermore holds licenses for acupuncture, Reiki 1 and 2, and Chinese

herbal medicine.  Aside from her regular presentations at local, national

and international conferences, she is also the founder and convener of

the Annual International Conference on the Study of Shamanism and

Alternative Modes of Healing since 1984.

In brief, she is concerned about fulfilling the needs of the moment and

is dancing in the middle of the stream while the banks of the river are floating by.
